When I first got serious about cycling, electric bikes didn’t exist. If you wanted to ride over a hill, you pedaled up the hill. If the wind was blowing 25 miles an hour across West Texas, you leaned into it and hoped your legs had something left.
Over the years I’ve ridden more than 155,000 miles, and during that time I’ve watched the cycling world change in a lot of ways. One of the biggest changes in recent years has been the rise of the electric bike.
At first, many traditional cyclists didn’t know what to think about them. Some people even dismissed them entirely. But after seeing how they’ve helped riders stay active — especially older riders — my view has become pretty simple:

Aging doesn’t mean we stop loving the things we’ve always loved. But it does mean our bodies change. Hills feel steeper. Long headwinds feel harder. Recovery takes longer than it used to.

I’ve also seen something else happen over the last few years. Couples who used to ride together but had drifted apart in fitness levels are riding together again. One rider might be on a traditional bike, while the other uses a little pedal assist to keep things balanced.

One of the things I appreciate most about e-bikes is that they extend the life of cycling for many riders.
Instead of someone hanging up their helmet at sixty-five or seventy because riding has become too demanding, they now have another option.
They can keep riding.
And from what I’ve seen on bike paths and quiet country roads, a lot of seniors are doing exactly that.
